Irish born Roisin Murphy, hid her ability to sing from others as a child because she didn’t feel her voice, which in her opinion mimicked Elaine Paige, matched her musical preference of Sonic Youth and Pixies. Upon meeting Mark Brydon she was inspired to change all that.

Roisin Murphy first drew attention as a member of Moloko, an electronic music duo with the more experienced musician, Mark Brydon who she met in 1994. Moloko’s first two albums Do You Like My Tight Sweater? and I Am Not A Doctor became popular in the underground dance scene. Both albums were similar in style, combining funk and electronic dance music. House music producer, Boris Dlugosch, created a remix of “Sing It Back” from the album I Am Not A Doctor and Moloko burst into mainstream.

The remix of “Sing It Back” edged into the top five for both UK and Irish single charts in 1999 and was a huge hit in Ibiza, enjoying international success. It would be featured on over 100 compilation albums. In exchange for the remix by Dlugosch, Murphy helped write “Never Enough” which made 16th on the top singles charts in 2001, became a big club hit and hit number 3 on the U.S. Hot Dance Club Play chart.

Things to Make and Do was Moloko’s third album, released in October of 2000 and it included more live instruments and more layered arrangements by Eddie Stevens, the keyboardist. The album ranked 3rd on the UK Albums Chart and “Time is Now” from that album became Moloko’s most popular British single reaching the 2nd spot on the charts.

Not long after the completion of the tour for their fourth album, 2003 Statues, Roisin Murphy and Brydon parted ways both personally and professionally. “The Only Ones” composed by Brydon and Murphy and performed my Moloko was a soundtrack for the movie, Johnny English, in 2003. Murphy then teamed with Matthew Herbert, in 2004 and her solo career was launched with her debut album, Ruby Blue.

Ruby Blue combined the electronic music that Moloko was known for with more traditional pop and jazz styles and included sounds created by common objects such as makeup, brass mice, and ornaments. Even though it failed commercially, Murphy announced in May of the following year that she was working more songs under EMI. In July 2007, Murphy released the single titled, “Overpowered”. The single was a combination of talents including herself, Paul Dolby of Bugz in the Attic’s, and Tom Elmhirst.

A collaboration with Andy Cato produced “Let Me Know” the second single released in September and quickly followed by her second solo album, Overpowered. By August 2008, Murphy began work on a third solo album with a goal of giving it a similar vibe to her second album. In July 2009, Murphy admitted the newer album had a gritty London sound that was more urban than her second album.

“Sing It Back” was featured as a soundtrack in the 2010 movie RepoMan starring Jude Law and Forest Whittaker. In March 2010 the DJ/production team Crookers released Tons of Friends with Roisin Murphy featured on the “Royal T” and “Hold Up Your Hand” tracks. Murphy teamed up with Dutch DJ Mason on “Boadicea” released in March 2011 as a single and she teams with Tony Christie on his album.

Roisin Murphy is no stranger to fashion either and is well known for her bold, non-traditional style of dress. Schon Magazine featured Roisin in their 10th issue which focused on the future and profiled strong female personalities in fashion who have altered the perceptions of the industry with their work.
